Are you dreaming of life as a scuba diving instructor? Are you imagining yourself on a tropical island scuba diving and meeting people from all around the world? If so, the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) is your starting point for turning your dreams into a reality then start now with James Wilkinson, British PADI Course Director in sunny Sharm.

Next Course Dates:

1st February 2022 To 15th February 2022

What Is an IDC?

IDC stands for Instructor Development Course. It’s the course you need to take to become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI). IDC’s are taught by PADI Course Directors, the highest level and most respected professional rating in recreational scuba diving.

The Instructor Development Course (IDC) is made up of two parts – the Assistant Instructor (AI) course runs for the first 6 days of the IDC and the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program that continues for another 4 days. Most dive professionals complete the entire IDC and go on to attend an Instructor Examination (IE), which is the final step to earn a PADI Instructor certification. At ScubaDreamz we offer a free one day IDC preparation. During this you will meet the PADI Course Director, our IDC Staff as well as completing any last paperwork.

We will review the five topics that you covered during your PADI Divemaster course. These topics will be part of the Instructor Exams.

They are:

  • Physics
  • Physiology
  • Recreational Dive Planner
  • Skills and Environment
  • Equipment

There will be a presentation on all of these topics as well a chance to ask questions to review your knowledge before the IDC starts.

A skill circuit will be conducted to refresh your memory of all skills.

Successfully completing just the AI course results in a PADI Assistant Instructor qualification.

When an AI is ready to progress, attending an OWSI program allows entry into an IE to earn a full PADI Instructor rating. Dive professionals who hold an instructor rating with another diver training organization may be eligible to enroll directly in the OWSI program. This recognizes prior instructor training and provides a path to become a PADI Instructor. However we offer crossover candidates may participate in the whole IDC for the price of an OWSI course. Over a minimum of ten days, but usually eleven days because of the one day free IDC preparation, the IDC teaches you to conduct all PADI core courses. You’ll be able to organize and present information, conduct skill development sessions and control open water dives. Basically, you become a better public speaker and get really good at demonstrating skills while watching out for student diver safety.

Key topics include:

  • PADI Standards and Procedures for courses you can teach with in water workshops
  • Learning, Instruction and the PADI System
  • Risk Management and Diver Safety
  • The Business of Diving and your role as an instructor
  • Marketing Diving and Sales Counseling

How Long Does the Course Take?

It can be completed in under two weeks.

How Easy Is It to Find Work After the Instructor Development Course?

After your IDC and exams, you’ll receive a certificate but you will need to wait for PADI to process your instructor application. As soon as this is processed you can start teaching – it will be mailed to you but you can also check online to see your status on the PADI Pros website (padi.com/mypadi and use your individual login).

If you are looking for work, the PADI Pros Site has a job board where PADI Dive Centres post their available positions. You can find this at the top of the homepage under ‘Classifieds.’ It is a really valuable tool to be aware of and can be quite inspiring.

I personally found work within 2 days of becoming an Instructor. I checked the job board and applied for some positions but I also emailed dive centres I previously dived and took courses with. I had interview requests in no time however ultimately joined the team where I took my PADI Divemaster Course and stayed there for four years!

How Do I Start?

  • If you are a certified diver you will need to be a PADI Divemaster or Assistant Instructor to take an IDC, have 60 logged dives which include night, deep and navigation diving, be a minimum of 18 years old, hold a current Emergency First Response (EFR) certification (within the last 24 months) and be fit for diving with a signed medical statement from your doctor.

Before you arrive:
Once we have received a deposit for your IDC and full payment for the materials, we
will send you a link that will allow you to access PADI Pros eLearning.
This will enable you to study independently and at your own pace before class. There
are nine interactive knowledge development sections. Completing the online section
before arrival saves classroom time, which allows more time for practicing the skills
that distinguish you as a PADI Instructor both in and out of the water.
If you haven’t already completed the Dive Theory Online or it’s been more than a
year since you went through it, it is strongly recommended that you do so prior to
starting the IDC. The program is a straightforward review of dive physics, physiology,
skills, equipment and environment, plus using the Recreational Dive Planner (RDP).
By successfully completing Dive Theory Online, you can also get credit for the dive
theory exam requirement during your IDC.
